The institution evolved from the former Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, which was established in 2002, before its transformation into a full-fledged university in 2021.

The history of Southern Delta University
Southern Delta University, Ozoro traces its roots to the institution that developed into Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, established to expand access to technical and vocational education in Delta State. Over the years, the institution grew its academic programmes, infrastructure and capacity, building a strong foundation in technology, engineering, agriculture, management and other professional disciplines. Its evolution reflected the growing need for skilled human capital and practical education capable of supporting economic and societal development.
In 2021, the institution was transformed into a full-fledged university as Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, marking a significant new chapter in its development. The University was subsequently renamed Southern Delta University, Ozoro, reflecting its broader academic mandate and evolving identity. Today, the University continues to build on its heritage while expanding opportunities in diverse fields of study, research and innovation, guided by its commitment to Innovation & Creativity.
