Two 100-level Engineering students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro have earned national recognition for their innovative work after emerging among the leading teams at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) InnovateNaija Champions Tech Competition.

The students, Anthony Favour Oghenero of the Department of Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering and Ahani Oghenetega Jude of the Department of Computer Engineering, impressed judges with their innovative project, “Autonomous Delivery Drone System.”

The project earned the students second place in Delta State and secured a position among the Top 8 teams nationally, marking a significant achievement for the young innovators and Southern Delta University.

Developing Technology for Real-World Challenges

The Autonomous Delivery Drone System was developed as an intelligent aerial transportation solution aimed at addressing some of the challenges associated with movement and logistics in densely populated and congested urban environments.

The proposed system is designed to facilitate faster and more efficient delivery of essential items, with potential applications including the transportation of urgent medical supplies and other critical consumer needs.

By leveraging autonomous aerial technology, the project demonstrates how emerging technologies can be applied to develop practical solutions to everyday challenges.

Research and Innovation at the Heart of the Project

The project was undertaken with the coordination and supervision of the Research Directorate of Southern Delta University, reflecting the University’s emphasis on research, innovation and practical technology development.

Speaking on the achievement, the Director of Research, Dr. Solomon A. Uriri, highlighted the project’s potential to demonstrate how student-led innovation can contribute to solving contemporary transportation and logistics challenges.

The students’ performance also highlights the opportunities available to young researchers and innovators at Southern Delta University to transform ideas into practical technological solutions.

University Rewards Student Excellence

In recognition of the students’ outstanding performance, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunny Awhefeada, and the University Management awarded both students free university hostel accommodation for the remainder of their undergraduate studies at Southern Delta University.

The gesture is intended to recognise their achievement while encouraging them to continue pursuing innovation, research and academic excellence.

The Vice-Chancellor described the achievement as an encouraging reflection of the University’s growing emphasis on technological advancement and student-centred research and innovation.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

The success of Anthony Favour Oghenero and Ahani Oghenetega Jude demonstrates the potential of young students to contribute to technological development when given the right academic environment, mentorship and opportunities.

For Southern Delta University, the achievement reinforces its commitment to Innovation and Creativity and its vision of preparing students to develop solutions that can have meaningful impact within their communities and beyond.
